The Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is world renowned for its conservation research and innovative sustainability models. Funding one of the largest bodies of research into a single species in the world, the AKF focuses on combining science, politics, and a global support base to set the stage for change at the legislative, developmental, and personal level.

Koalas are known as a 'flagship species', meaning that protecting their habitat also saves other native wildlife. As koala habitat diminishes throughout Australia and the population continues to decline steeply, the koala is a sad example of the plight of biodiversity around the world.

Among the AKF's many achievements is the famous Koala Habitat Atlas, a project which identifies, maps and ranks koala habitat in order to inform decision makers and planners about better land management. The world famous Atlas has been awarded a Computerworld Smithsonian Medal for its innovation and has led to many conservation successes throughout the koala's range. It is a trailblazer for mapping habitats globally.
